About Water Towers

Elevated water tanks are scattered throughout the Queensland lanscape. They are often simple concrete structures that are easy to overlook but they were once essential for maintaining reliable water supply.

Pumps fill the tank from a nearby water source and gravity does the work of pushing it through the reticulation network at consistent pressure. This keeps supply reliable during power outages and reduces the running cost of the system. Other local towns like Marian, Koumala and Slade Point all have their own water towers. The Slade Point tower has become a local icon after it was painted with a beautiful whale mural in 2019.​

Where Insite Comes In

These towers are decades-old infrastructure carrying structural defects few people think about.

Concrete spalling, corrosion on access ladders and platforms, and cracking are common failure points. Inspecting them the traditional way means scaffolding or using an Elevated Work Platform (EWP) which can be dangerous & unsafe. Insite captures full external condition data in a single flight and produces an engineering condition report signed off by a qualified engineer.

The Insite Process

Every Insite inspection follows the same proven workflow. From automated data capture through to an engineering defect report. Full coverage, full detail.

Automated Flight Route Mapping

The drone performs an initial automated scan of the asset, building a real-time 3D mesh of the tower and surrounding obstacles. That mesh is used to generate a precise flight path around the entire bridge. accounting for tress, water, and complex geometry. Every surface is located before detailed capture begins.


Automated Data Collection

The drone executes the planned route autonomously, capturing thousands of high-resolution images in a single flight. Each battery last 30 to 45 minutes. When the battery is low the drone returns home, battery is replaced and off it goes to continue the mission. The camera rotates to take photos at every angle, providing unmatched coverage of all structures.


No scaffolding or access equipment required.


Processing & Reporting

For this inspection, the drone captured 1900 images. All in 4k resolution. This data is fed into ArcGIS Drone2Map, which produces a dense point cloud. The software then computes surfaces and textures from the images to produce a high-accuracy, high-quality photogrammetric model.


The model provides all the visual data an engineer needs to remotely inspect the bridge and identify structural defects. Every defect is is located on a 'Defect Markup' drawing package. This provides maintenance team with the information they need to plan effectively.
