About The Asset
Each asset Insite inspects comes with its own challenges. This bridge, located on Mackay's Harbour Road, was no exception.
The Harbour Rd bridge project presented 3 main challenges:
1. Active traffic - this is the main access road to the local port, so the bridge is always being used by trucks and cars.
Low clearance - Even at low tide, the clearance between the water and the bridge is only 1.6m. This meant there was minimal room for error when capturing data beneath the bridge.
Tide dependence - The clearance under the bridge was dependent on the tide, due to its proximity to the ocean. The capture could only be done at low tide, when the clearance was greatest.
Despite the challenges, Insite took great pleasure in applying our state-of-the-art inspection process to capture the condition of this NQBP asset.


Our Results
All structural data captured remotely in just 30 minutes. High quality data, fast and safely.
Upon completion of the data capture flight, the data was processed to generate an interactive digital twin.
Insite worked with the client to develop a workflow for sharing and integrating the results with GIS system.

Lessons Learnt
Insite successfully captured the full condition of the Harbour Rd Bridge in Mackay, but it wasn't without many lessons learnt along the way.
Processing Optimisation
This project was the first time Insite adopted the ArcGIS Drone2Map software for processing and ESRI integration. After trials and tweaks, Insite was able to minimise processing time and maximise output quality.
Image Overlap Ratio
Drone2Map requires at least 90% overlap ratio to generate high quality gaussian splat products. Road-level data was catpured at the standard 70%, resulting in suboptimal quality on the road surface and guarding.
GPS Precision
Inaccuracies in the GPS locations of the initial data capture resulted in processing challenges. The data was recaptured with Real Time Kinematics (RTK) functioning correctly, resulting in improved data and streamlined processing.
